 Session description

From chronicles to novels. European cities and literary sources from the 15th to the 19th century

Abstract:
Literary sources (medieval and early modern chronicles, autobiographical texts, travel accounts, poetry, drama, novels etc.) give insight into many aspects of urban life (political, social, economical, cultural, religious etc.). The aim of this session is to show how and to what extent they can enrich and renew our way of seeing and understanding European cities, big metropolises such as London or Paris as well as smaller regional centres. The methodological problems which arise when literary sources are used for the study of late medieval, early modern and modern urban societies will also be tackled. In order to make the debate more interesting, the participants should come from different research horizons (disciplines, periods etc.).

Questions :
- How can we define urban literature? What are the differences between premodern and modern urban literature?
- Which roles does the city play in the text? Does the author show a preoccupation with urban events, a focus on urban space and/or a feeling of metropolitan alienation?
- What do we know about the readership and its responses to the text? Do we know of other forms of interplay between these literary texts and urban society, of the relation with other urban media (such as urban public ritual, visual arts, advertising…)?
- How can we understand the tensions between official and unofficial urban literary texts?

Session description in an other language
